The firm was founded by Scott Kern when he returned to private practice after running the Carvel Corporation ice cream franchise company, a major Northeast franchisor of ice cream shops, for a number of years and serving concurrently as its General Counsel. Allan Hillman partnered with Scott to form Kern & Hillman, one of the few law firms in the country dedicated exclusively to clients engaged in franchising.
